APERA was launched in Bangkok on Thursday 13 December 2001 at the 2001 UNESCO-ACEID conference. Dr Rung Kaewdang, Secretary-General of the Office of the National Education Commission, Thailand, officially launched the association. Below are images from the launch.

How do I become a member?
APERA membership is available for research and educational institutions, national associations, individuals and students in the Asia-Pacific region.

There are four membership categories. These are:
Institutional Membership: for institutions that implement research activities or train educational professionals;
associations of professionals that coordinate activities for educational researchers at the national level;
universities and colleges of advanced learning;
organisations having an interest in educational research and having a presence in the Asia-Pacific region;
government departments, entities, agencies or semi-governmental entities having an interest in educational research.

Fellow Membership: for those recognised by their colleagues as deservingrecognition for meritorious service to educational research.

professionals; and

Student Membership: for those in the process of undertaking or completing a university (or other tertiary level) qualification in education.

How did APERA begin?
The idea of increased collaboration in educational research was discussed during a 1995 meeting co-sponsored by the UNESCO ASIA-Pacific Centre of Educational Innovation for Development (ACEID) and the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

Fourteen countries were represented at that meeting. Discussions centred on the identification of research priorities in the region and on ways of collaborating to address them.

A number of follow-up meetings were subsequently held over the next few years between research and development institutes in the region. These meetings included discussion of a regional educational research association.

In Tokyo in October 2000 participants in the UNESCO regional meeting, hosted by NIER, Japan, and attended by organisations from across the region, agreed to the establishment of APERA.

It was also decided at this meeting that ACER would provide secretariat services for the first few years, and that the APERA office would initially be located at the ACER office in Melbourne, Australia.

How is APERA structured?
APERA is a not-for-profit organisation. The founding Board of Directors comprises eight members drawn from the initial APERA founding membership of twenty-two organisations from fourteen countries in the region (see www.apera.org for list of founding members).

Promote greater communication between researchers and policy makers, administrators and educational practitioners;
Disseminate educational research findings; and Support the development of educational research skills in the Asia-Pacific region.

What activities and services will APERA be offering?
APERA will initially concentrate on two activities:
The regional research journal, Educational Research for Policy and Practice The journal is an international, professionally refereed journal targeted at education professionals with an interest in the ways in which educational research can inform, and be informed by, educational decision making in the Asia-Pacific region.

An annual conference
This conference will provide an opportunity for researchers in the region to present the results of their research, and to discuss the implications of that research for improved policy and practice.
APERA will progressively provide other services, such as:

A program of professional development training seminars for educational research professionals;

Electronic discussion group on its web site;

The publication of a book series on topics of relevance to the Asia-Pacific using authors from the region;

The publication and updating of the Asia-Pacific Handbook on Educational Research;

Electronic newsletter to members to provide updates on educational research activities and projects in the region;

Support of interest groups within the region;

Support of research students and the encouragement of staff exchanges between institutions in the region; and

The recognition of outstanding researchers in the region through a fellowship scheme.
